Choosing the Real Estate Agent that is Right for You
By Cathie Elliott Broker/Owner, The Clarke Agency, Inc. Real Estate
One of the best ways to find the agent that is right for you is by talking to people that live in that community. Ask co-workers, friends, and relatives about their experiences with real estate agents. A positive personal recommendation is usually a reliable source of information in choosing an agent. In addition, you can drive around the area and make note of agents’ names on the for sale signs. Good agents get more listings, so you’ll notice some names appearing more often than others. Don’t hesitate to interview a couple of agents to see which one feels like the best fit for you. Some of your choice criteria should include experience, commitment, formal training, and personal rapport. In terms of experience, every agent has to start somewhere, but an agent who has been in the business longer will have experience and knowledge that a new agent won’t have. One of the roles of a real estate agent is to be a source of knowledge, information, and advice. Don’t hesitate to ask him/her for a list of recent clients as references. A good real estate agent is also committed to doing a good job for their clients and customers. The agent needs to be flexible in their schedule so they can meet with prospects at their convenience. In addition, real estate agents take extensive course work to get their license. However, there are a number of professional certifications and additional course work that a real estate agent can take to educate themselves further. These additional courses and designations require a commitment of time and money. It indicates that the agent is dedicated to furthering their knowledge, adhering to ethical standards, and improving their customer service. Just like having good rapport with your doctor, dentist, hair stylist or barber, you want to have a good working relationship with your real estate professional. You need to be able to communicate with your agent, and feel comfortable sharing your real estate needs with him/her. Listen to what your gut tells you about this person. Some people’s personalities just don’t line up well. Buying or selling a home is often stressful and emotionally challenging. You need to feel comfortable on a personal level with your agent, no matter how experienced he or she is. Take your time in choosing an agent, ask around for recommendations, and don’t hesitate to interview for personal rapport. |
